Sunshine & Mental Health

"Why do I feel better in the summer?"

As the sun graces the sky with its warm embrace and the world awakens from the chill of winter, there's an almost tangible shift in the air. With longer days, brighter skies, and the promise of outdoor adventures, it's no wonder that many people find their spirits lifted during the summer months. But amidst this seasonal euphoria, it's crucial to remember that mental health doesn't take a vacation. While the summer glow may bring temporary relief, therapy remains an essential tool for navigating the complexities of our inner worlds.

The Summer High

Summer often feels like a time of liberation and rejuvenation. The abundance of natural light can boost our mood, increase our vitamin D levels, and energize us to explore new activities. Whether it's lounging on sun-kissed beaches, hiking through lush forests, or simply basking in the warmth of a backyard barbecue, the opportunities for enjoyment seem endless.

The social aspect of summer can be a significant mood booster. With outdoor gatherings, festivals, and vacations, there's a sense of connection and camaraderie that permeates the season. Spending time with loved ones, making new friends, and engaging in shared experiences can provide a sense of belonging and fulfillment.

Additionally, the break from routine that often accompanies summer can offer a welcome respite from the stresses of daily life where we typically notice ADHD, trauma responses, anxiety, stress, and depression flare up. School may be out for students, work schedules may ease up, and responsibilities may temporarily lighten. This shift can create space for relaxation, creativity, and self-discovery.

The Therapeutic Imperative

While the summer months may bring a sense of relief for many, it's essential to recognize that mental health challenges don't simply disappear with the change in seasons. Beneath the surface of summer's vibrancy, individuals may still grapple with anxiety, depression, trauma, or other psychological struggles. Furthermore, the pressure to maintain a facade of happiness during the "carefree" season can exacerbate feelings of inadequacy or isolation.

This is where therapy plays a crucial role. While the summer glow may provide temporary reprieve, therapy offers sustainable support and healing. Here's why:

Validation and Understanding: Therapy provides a safe space to explore and express our emotions, regardless of the season. A skilled therapist can offer validation, empathy, and insight, helping us navigate the complexities of our inner world.

Skill Building: Summer can be an opportune time to work on coping strategies and self-care routines. Therapy equips us with practical tools to manage stress, regulate emotions, and cultivate resilience, empowering us to navigate life's challenges more effectively.

Addressing Underlying Issues: Beneath the surface of temporary summer euphoria, unresolved issues may still linger. Therapy delves into the root causes of our struggles, facilitating deep-seated healing and personal growth.

Preventive Maintenance: Just as we maintain our physical health through regular exercise and proper nutrition, therapy serves as preventive maintenance for our mental well-being. By proactively addressing issues before they escalate, we can build greater resilience and emotional agility.

Long-Term Growth: The benefits of therapy extend far beyond the summer months. By investing in our mental health year-round, we lay the foundation for long-term growth, fulfillment, and flourishing.

Embracing the Full Spectrum of Seasons

As we revel in the warmth and vibrancy of summer, let's remember that mental health is a journey, not a destination. While the summer glow may offer temporary solace, therapy provides the steady support needed to navigate life's ebbs and flows with resilience and grace. By embracing the full spectrum of seasons—both external and internal—we can cultivate a deeper sense of well-being, authenticity, and connection year-round. So, as the sun sets on another summer day, let's carry the warmth of its glow into the depths of our souls, where true healing and transformation await.
